Q: I am a single traveller - is this ok?

A: Over 60% of travellers on OzBus are travelling alone; we welcome single travellers into a group environment with like minded individuals, so you won’t feel alone. There is also no single supplement on our trips so everyone pays the same for their Africa experience.

Q: Is there an age limit on OzBus tours?

A: There are no upper age limits on OzBus trips, although we do ask that you are fit and healthy. Our trips are participation style where everyone is asked to help with cooking and cleaning duties on a roster basis. As we offer a camping style you should be able to put up your tent and carry your backpack or bags to / from the Overland truck.
At this stage we are not able to take people under 18 years of age.

Q: What else will I have to pay for besides the tour cost?

A: The Local Payment forms part of your total trip cost and is used to make payments by your Tour Leader whilst on tour, covering items such as fresh products, camp fees and park entrances. The local payment is paid to your Tour Leader at the Pre departure meeting, so you don’t have to carry it with you and worry about it. This local payment is required in US$ cash only.
Optional Activities are available for you to do along the way on the tour, but are not compulsory. This is why they have not been included in the trip cost. These activities must be booked and paid for along the way, usually in US$ cash. Some of the bigger excursions can be paid in US$ Travellers cheques although there is usually a 5% fee.
Daily Spending generally relates to buying bottled water, refreshments and other drinks. This can obviously vary according to each passenger but a general guide is to budget US$25 per day.

Q: What if I can't make the pre-departure meeting?

A: This is no problem, but please make a note of this when booking so we can advise your Tour Guide. We send you most of the information that is discussed in the meeting anyway when your booking is confirmed. You will just need to pay your local payment to the Tour Leader the next morning before departure.

Q: I enjoy walking/hiking, where will I have a chance to hike on tour?

A: There will be different options on each tour ranging from the ultimate challenge, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro to walking up sand dunes in Namibia. There is also a hike to the mission village at Livingstonia above Lake Malawi on most trips.

Q: Do I need to bring a sleeping bag?

A: Yes, we provide 2 person tents and camping equipment, but you need to bring your own sleeping bag and sleeping mat. We don’t provide these for health reasons.

Q: When is the best time to travel to Africa?

A: Weather conditions vary dramatically across the African continent. Generally on a longer trip if you have rainy weather in one place it will be perfect conditions in another. In February and March there are heavy rains in East Africa, and South Africa can be quite cold in the winter months of June and July, but otherwise weather cannot be guaranteed so go with the flow, as during rainy seasons you may well see more wildlife as these are the times that they are on the move.

Q: Must I get a Yellow Fever vaccination?

A: YES if you are visiting Kenya, Tanzania or Zambia, or have recently visited a Yellow fever region, you will need your International vaccination certificate / card.

Q: There are many overland trucks travelling through Africa, how to choose one?

A: There are a lot of different companies offering similar experiences in Africa. Most of the trucks run a similar route, so look at what they offer to suit you. Also which departure days suit your plans.
We offer a mix of inclusions and optional activities, whereas some companies will include very little in what you pay, others will include everything that you might not want to do.
Our partner in Africa hasover 20 years experience operating these trips which is also a benefit.

Q: How do I charge my batteries for my camera/iPod/laptop?

A: We recommend you bring along 2 sets of rechargeable batteries + 2 sets of normal batteries, so you can be guaranteed of having working batteries at all times.
Some of the campsites will have electricity points (bring along an international converter plug) where you can recharge your batteries.
If you know you take a lot of photos, then maybe spend a bit more on buying an extra card with a high storage capacity and bring along extra batteries.

Q: Will there be internet access along the road?

A: Remember to tell those at home eagerly awaiting emails that you might often be on the road 5-7 days between emailing.
There are not going to be many places where you can download photos, as this is normally only possible in big cities at Internet cafes with fast connections, so bring along an extra card for your digital camera if you like taking a lot of photos!
Internet cafes can be found in Nairobi, Arusha, Zanzibar, Victoria Falls, Maun, Swakopmund and Cape Town.
